Why is this causing such a ruckus? When my wife and I saw the halftime show we were both surprised, then argued for a few minutes about whether or not she was wearing a pasty or some such and then the game started and that was the end of that. The I saw a teaser for the news letting everyone know where they could call to complain about the halftime show. It didn’t occur to me that people would get so upset. Perhaps because I’m male. Now why is it that the same people that are terribly distraught over almost seeing a nipple for 1 second and not so distraught over the lyrics in the songs, the violence of the game, the greed of some of the players and owners involved?

So, anyway, I’m over at Slashdot getting my daily dose of geek news and notice the new poll asking “Most important news story?”. Of course Jackson’s boob is leading the poll, followed distantly by Cowboyneal’s hat, US Wars, etc. Slashdot is obviously not the kind place to polling data that represents a wide cross section of Americans.

However the discussion surrounding the poll I found very interesting. There were some points raised to counter some of the things I mention above, but many others that reinforced my feelings on the matter. For example:

I find this argument absolutely fascinating. Everyone is all up in arms about a little bit of (alleged) accidental nudity. No one seems to have an issue with subjecting their children to 4 hours of violence, however…

“It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes”, and “I’ll have you naked by the end of this song”? How many people are complaining about the lyrics and what they suggest? Yet how many are choosing to kick up an almighty fuss about one partially-clad breast?

On the other side of the argument you have:

It’s not the nudity that bothers me, it’s the depiction and glorification of one person ripping another one’s clothes off. You think that kids aren’t going to see that and try to emulate it?

Oh and just out of curiosity, how come it’s ok for men to show their nipples in public? There not even worth a lousy string of plastic beads 🙁
