    • Married by Charles Cummings. Information found in Marriage Register 2 page 269 of Washington Co., VA
    • The Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy book, by Floyd Benjamin Layne, mentions additional children: Lou and Sallie though no evidence apart from this book has been found. Notice also that this book lists Lou and Sally as the last two children of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. There was either some sort of mixup, or these children did not survive to adulthood.

  • Notes
    • There was very little we could learn of Margaret “Peggy” Layne despite her having lived for at least 78 years. We know from the deed signed by her and her siblings in May of 1838 that she had married Richard Bradford and that they were living in Marion County, Tennessee at the time. Richard and his wife are found in the Marion County census records for 1830, but in 1840 he and Margaret appear instead in the Coffee County census. In 1850 Richard and Margaret are found in District 6 of Grundy County. As Grundy was formed from portions of Warren and Coffee counties, I don’t think Richard and Margaret moved to Grundy, but rather Grundy moved to them.

There are also two children living with the Bradfords in 1850, but it is uncertain and perhaps unlikely these are Richard and Margaret’s sons. The first, whose name is garbled, is 11 years old but does not appear in the 1840 census. Richard and Margaret appear to have gone childless for as much as 20 years of marriage before this child would have born and Margaret would have been 37. Not out of the realm of possibility, but curious to say the least. Next is Willam, aged 4 in 1850 and born in Kentucky. Rather than assume Richard and Margaret moved to or visited Kentucky in the mid 1840s where she gave birth to a child at the age of 44, a more likely scenario is that this is the child of a relative perhaps. Or it may be that the couple just developed a habit of taking in those in need as evidenced by the 1860 census where we find Mary Fitch, aged 12, and Judith Lowe, aged 40, now living with the couple as well. With regards to Judith Lowe, that could also be a transcription error that should be Judith Lane, but there are no Judith Lanes in the family tree at that time.

Further evidence that Richard and Margaret had no children of their own is found in the 1870 census. Richard has seemingly passed away by this time (at a minimum he lived until 1862 as his name is found in the special IRS Tax Assessment list of 1862) and Margaret is living, not with a son or daughter, but with her nephew Abraham K Layne and his wife Elender Tennessee (Kilgore) Layne. The last record we have of Margaret is the 1880 census where she is found still living with Elender, though Abraham has passed away by this time as well.
