    • The Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy book, by Floyd Benjamin Layne, mentions additional children: Lou and Sallie though no evidence apart from this book has been found. Notice also that this book lists Lou and Sally as the last two children of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. There was either some sort of mixup, or these children did not survive to adulthood.

  • Notes
    • There are quite a few records that make it relatively easy to track Isaac himself as he appears seven times in the U.S. census from 1830 through his final appearance in 1900 which occurred shortly before his death later that year. The difficulty lies in reconciling the information that appears about his family in Floyd Benjamin Layne’s book on Layne genealogy. Issac’s entry states that "tradition says Isaac married 5 times and had no sons”, but then goes on to suggest that Abraham Layne (b 1827) was likely Isaac’s son. Additional research has cast doubt on that assumption.

On the number and identities of Isaac’s many wives. Floyd Benjamin states that they were: Polly Steele, Delphia Fultz, Mary Conaster, Mary Mayhew and Mary Dempsey. We’ve been able to identify four of these starting with Mary Steele who is almost certainly the woman identified as Polly by FBL. This Mary is listed alongside Isaac in the 1850 and 1860 census returns and she is identified as Daniel’s mother on his death record. Daniel is the last of Isaac’s children until nearly 40 years later when another son is born. Given this and the lack of an obvious gap between children where Isaac may have been unmarried for a time, we can safely assume that all of Daniel’s older siblings were born to Mary (Steele) Layne as well. This also agrees with the order of Isaac’s wives as recorded by FBL.

A record exists of Isaac’s marriage to his second wife, Delphia Fults, in Grundy County on the March 18th, 1870. She also appears with him in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census, Isaac is listed with Mary A. For the time being we believe this is the Mary Mayhew provided by Floyd Benjamin but it may also be Mary Conatser. There is no evidence of any “Mayhew” families in Grundy or the surrounding counties during the time period we’re interested in so an alternative might be Mary Matthews. Details are sketchy regarding these two Marys and it may be that there was only one but, for the time being, we still have them both recorded as Isaac’s third and fourth wives respectively.

Lastly we have a record of Isaac’s marriage to Mary Dempsy in Sequatchie County on October 24th, 1891. In the 1900 census she is listed with Isaac along with two children from a prior marriage. Her death certificate in 1921 reveals her maiden name as Frizzell as her parents are listed as John Frizzell and Ester Fine. The 1900 census also records the surprising addition of another son named John born in 1893. Isaac would have been 84 years old at the time of his birth!

Next we come to the matter of Isaac’s children. Floyd Benjamin suggests only one son named Abraham and eight daughters. The information on his Isaac’s daughter is, apart from a few inaccuracies, correct. However we’ve already noted John Isaac’s birth in 1893 as well as his other son, Daniel, in 1852. I’ve been unable to find any evidence to support Abraham and other than the Layne genealogy book which seems to base this assumption almost entirely on the fact that an Abraham Layne lived next door in 1850. If there were another son there should be evidence to support that in either the 1830 or 1840 census, but the only male present in the records is Isaac himself. There is another Abraham living with Isaac’s daughter Sarah and her husband Allen McCullough in 1860, but he is likely the son of Daniel and Anna (Bryant) Layne. After eliminating all other possibilities I now believe that the Abraham living next door in 1850 was his nephew and the son of his older brother David (b 1791).

Both Abraham and Elizabeth married McGowan’s according to FBL but I’ve been unable to find any McGowan’s in the area and this may be based on the name of Abraham’s mother-in-law as is often transcribed from the 1850 census as “Nancy McGown”. To me this name appears to be Nancy M. Gowan and there are many Goins in the area which is commonly misspelled Gowan or Gowen. Abraham’s wife was likely Margaret Goins and not McGowan. As for Elizabeth, she is something of a mystery. In 1860 several of Isaac’s daughters are living nearby in Grundy county, but there is no sign of Elizabeth. There is a curious James W Lane that we have been unable to place who is living six households away. This James is married to Elizabeth, aged 34. There is the possibility, perhaps a small one, that this is Isaac’s first daughter.

The rest of the information regarding Isaac’s daughters is fairly accurate with only minor discrepancies and/or spelling variations.
