Soon We'll All Be Related

I finally got around to my backlog of genealogy changes that people have sent. Thanks for the info, always nice to hear from relatives no matter how distant. Over 1000 surnames now, and I'm closing in on 6000 entries in my little database. Is there anyone you know listed?

Patriot Games

I'm going to have to stop reading Katherine Koble's blog. I've made a point to try and curtail politically oriented posts because I can't see that it does any good. The people that agree will say "right on!" and those that don't will say "you're an idiot". And what was really accomplished? Oh well I'm posting this anyway. It all started as a comment I was going to make in response to this post...

I find the apathy towards the government spying on it's citizenry interesting. There are plenty of folks that don't seem to care, and the thinking is usually, hey I'm not doing anything wrong, nothing to hide, snoop around all you want. Seems reasonable. But then I wonder, what if our government tried different means, but achieving the same ends...

...let's says roving government officials were allowed by law to peer into your windows? Perhaps with an innocuous sounding name like, oh, The SS The Patriot Patrol... or PP for short. Would the same people still feel the same apathy? I'm sure some would.

Perhaps the PP might eventually be allowed to expand their activities in the name of patriotism. Maybe they could conduct random searches of you, your property, your past for any potential unpatriotic terrorist activity? There is already a precedent of sorts if you liken it to a tax audit. Doesn't seem such much of a stretch to me. They'd probably give this process a name like Patriot Audit. Not quite so innocuous, but the word Patriot is in there so it would be tough to beat.

Oh! You know what would be really good. Perhaps if we educated the nations youth to report any suspicious unpatriotic behavior to the nice PP. We can reward the kids with little Happy Meal like toys call 'em, I dunno, Patriot Prizes. Maybe a "My kid put a terrorist in Gitmo" bumper sticker for the grown ups? Mister PP, my daddy said the President is a derfwad! What's a derfwad mister? This program sounds great and I bet it would keep us all ever so safe. And who could oppose an idea with a catchy name like the Patriot Kids? It's patriotic and it's about kids?! No politician would dare oppose it!

Yeah so I'm taking this too extremes. Lord knows the government is loathe to expand or abuse it's authority. Me, I'm kinda partial to the Fourth Amendment, It's a shame the guys that came up with that didn't have the foresight to give it a catchy patriotic name so it would appeal to the masses.

Text Adventure Fan?

Are you a fan of those old Infocom games such as Zork, Starcross, Planetfall, etc? You might enjoy this... unless you are also a fan of President and his handling of the war in Iraq.

Sneak Preview

I've received blessing from work to set up a little closed beta for my latest project. It's actually more of a preview. Beta implies that the feature set is frozen, and I'm really only about 2/3 of the way along.

Here's the deal: I'm writing a little app that can monitor various events such as PowerMate and AirClick signals, hot keys, itunes, etc and execute a task in response to these events. The tasks include things like executing an AppleScript, simulating a key press, presenting an on screen message, writing to a file, and so forth. And I'm looking for a little feedback. So if you have a PowerMate or AirClick, or if you are a former ClipFiler user, or you're just naturally curious, then email me at casey@griffintechnology.com requesting access to the beta. Please let me know if you're using a PowerMate or AirClick, oh it might be helpful to know if you're in the Nashville area too.

This is a limited time offer! Act now! Supplies are limited! etc etc

Oh I forgot to mention, the software requires Mac OS X 10.4

Stupid Google Tricks

Wooooolf!
Wooooolf!

This post from the Red Shed aka Jonathan Rentzsch aka Wolf proved an inescapable 15 minute diversion.

The idea is to Google your first name, prepending unfortunately.

  • Unfortunately Casey chose the wrong goals in Southern American countries. no one was supposed to find out about that
  • Unfortunately, Casey's chief has thousands of young people left at his disposal; to use as cannon fodder for his bait-and-switch, corporate profiteering. don't mess with my chief.
  • Unfortunately, Casey strikes out and all his friends and fans leave him. Wait 'til the chief hears about this... chief?.
  • Burden Brothers have not been posting mean shit about Casey, unfortunately Casey has. Those Burden Brothers had it coming.
  • Unfortunately, Casey has himself been demagoging against Social Security reform. fat chance.
  • Unfortunately, Casey's vaccinations were not up to date and dogs in our shelters are not vaccinated until they leave the shelter. But my nose is wet. See?.
  • Unfortunately, Casey has only begun to turn on his political machine. This machine employs some of the most negative campaign tactics imaginable. Muwhahahaha!!
  • Unfortunately, Casey is anything but cool. sniff
  • Unfortunately, Casey had an accident, but she’s all better now! What the hell kinda "accident" did that!?

These things make me nervous

First drunkenbatman considering the idea that Apple might someday incorporate a Growl-like notification system into Mac OS X and yet not living up to the expectations we all have for such beast.

And then, Todd Ditchendorf speculating that Dan Wood, creator of Watson and the as yet unreleased Sandvox, may be the Agrajag of Mac software developers.

Also, yesterday I noticed this article giving the odds of an official Bluetooth Apple remote debuting at MacWorld as 3-1. I'm guessing that wouldn't really help sales of the AirClick.

So anyway, we'll find out Tuesday who gets a reprieve and who doesn't. They say when one door closes another opens. Trouble is trying to get through the door before Apple notices.

Update: Dan Wood discusses his personal experiences dealing with Apple and the inspiration behind Karelia's new logo in this article.

Springtime in Nashville

Strange Weather
Strange Weather

This weather we are having lately confuses and frightens me. 70 degrees and it's January 4th. Looking at Ye Old Almanac, I see that today's temperature may very well be a record. Why we haven't seen temperatures like these since way back in... er... 1998 when it reached 69 degrees.

Now I really don't know the details of the whole global warming debate and today's data amounts to nothing more than a statistical blip. But thinking back about the odd weather over the past few years does tend to raise an eyebrow.

Still, it's hard to get too bent out of shape when it's gorgeous and sunny out when it should be cold, gray and miserable. I just hope it doesn't translate to 105-110 degree days come August.
