Farewell GLW

Way back, when I was a 20 year old electronics student at ITT Tech, I was looking for a job at a company where I could possibly put my newly acquired skills to work. I found an ad in the paper for electronics assembly workers and figured it was close enough and so I applied for a job. Maybe I could work my way into the testing department or something I thought. The company was called Harrison Systems back then and I started in production assembling the components that make up a mixing console. After I graduated from ITT in 1989 I asked to be given a chance to work in the testing department. There weren't any openings in testing, however, Dave Harrison wanted to move on to some other projects and needed someone to maintain software for the Series X and I was offered a shot. Apparently my work was impressive enough, as I skipped the testing department and landed straight in engineering.

I worked with a lot of great people and worked on some very cool projects during the last 15 years at Harrison which is now GLW. I've spent basically my whole adult life working at that place and I'll miss it and all of the people there very much. But now it's time for me to move on. I wish the company and all of the people there all the best. And I want to especially thank everyone that took a chance on me and gave me the opportunities that have gotten me where I am today. I am deeply indebted.

Crime & Punishment

So last night Alex (my daughter) was not being a good girl... at all. It's not important to get into the list of transgressions right now, but suffice to say it was worthy of a spanking and grounding her from television for a day. After she responded to being grounded from television for a day with "I don't care", I told her "Fine, you can be grounded for another day". At which point she tried to recant.

So anyway, on to this morning. As Susie was getting Alex ready for school this morning Alex matter-of-factly informed Susie, "Momma, since I'm grounded from TV, I'm going to need you to tape a couple of shows for me today".

Janet Jackson's Boobie

Why is this causing such a ruckus? When my wife and I saw the halftime show we were both surprised, then argued for a few minutes about whether or not she was wearing a pasty or some such and then the game started and that was the end of that. The I saw a teaser for the news letting everyone know where they could call to complain about the halftime show. It didn't occur to me that people would get so upset. Perhaps because I'm male. Now why is it that the same people that are terribly distraught over almost seeing a nipple for 1 second and not so distraught over the lyrics in the songs, the violence of the game, the greed of some of the players and owners involved?

So, anyway, I'm over at Slashdot getting my daily dose of geek news and notice the new poll asking "Most important news story?". Of course Jackson's boob is leading the poll, followed distantly by Cowboyneal's hat, US Wars, etc. Slashdot is obviously not the kind place to polling data that represents a wide cross section of Americans.

However the discussion surrounding the poll I found very interesting. There were some points raised to counter some of the things I mention above, but many others that reinforced my feelings on the matter. For example:

I find this argument absolutely fascinating. Everyone is all up in arms about a little bit of (alleged) accidental nudity. No one seems to have an issue with subjecting their children to 4 hours of violence, however...

"It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes", and "I'll have you naked by the end of this song"? How many people are complaining about the lyrics and what they suggest? Yet how many are choosing to kick up an almighty fuss about one partially-clad breast?

On the other side of the argument you have:

It's not the nudity that bothers me, it's the depiction and glorification of one person ripping another one's clothes off. You think that kids aren't going to see that and try to emulate it?

Oh and just out of curiosity, how come it's ok for men to show their nipples in public? There not even worth a lousy string of plastic beads :(
