Reference: Patrick Layne b. 26 Jul 1869, TN
Notes: Murdered by ______ Hoodenpyle. (As listed on your site).

Hi, I am David Hoodenpyle, fathers: Cornelius H., John Alley H, Jesse H, Robert H., David H., Philip G H.

I live in Florida and have family in Chattanooga. My Hoodenpyle tree is listed at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/o/David-A-Hoodenpyle/?Welcome=1045065940

I have always heard that "Jesse Hoodenpyle" killed Pat Layne in Daus Tennessee. Here is the story as told by Ratus Mosley, who is retired on Signal Mtn. I just don't which Jesse? A sitting judge in McMinnville told me that that he had read about a Jessee Hoodenpyle that was hanged in his jusidiction for murder of a Layne. So, there must be some unread history waiting to be told. My ggranfather was Jessee and lived to be an old man 1857 - abt 1950. One of his sons from his first wife was a Jessee Jr. If I were to guess, this could be the one, although there are other Jesses as well. What information do you have????

The story as told from Ratus Mosley:
Jesse was selling some moonshine to Pat on the Hoodenpyle barn in the Daus community. The moonshine was made in an old mine on the mountain and was later carried to the farm for storage. An argument followed, (they had probably been drinking), over selling more brew to Pat which Jesse refused to do. Pat had started to walk down the railroad tracks but returned. After arguing some more, Jesse killed Pat with a gun. The Moseleys bought the farm in later years where Ratus was shown the bloodstain by his dad. It was still visible in the barn. Jesse was later hanged in McMinnville, Tennessee for murder.

First off, nice to meet you David. It's always good to hear from a "new cousin" or in this case 4th cousin once removed. :)

The story about Jesse Hoodenpyle and Patrick Layne is very interesting. Unfortunately, I haven't researched either of these individuals very thoroughly. The information I have regarding Patrick Layne is from a portion of a book on Layne genealogy by Benjamin Layne that was given to me by my aunt and that is all it had to say about the murder. And my Philip Gysberti Hoodenpyle branch stops at the your great-grandfather Jesse.

I'll add this story to the notes for Patrick though and keep it in mind as I continue my research. Hopefully I or someone else out there can provide additional details some day.

Oh, and the Family Tree Maker web interface has never worked on my Mac (maybe another browser will), so won't be able to view your tree easily. And, I have some other questions for your, that I'll email later. Again, very good to hear from you.
